Saracione Reels
Few names in reelmaking are more revered than Joe Saracione. He has been making superb reels since the early 1980s and is best known for his various models in the classic or traditional
style. Many of us were very disappointed when Joe announced his retirement in 2005. Well, the good news is that he's back and is making what he says is the finest reel he's ever done. When everything is on board some time in 2008 Joe will have three sizes of a trout reel and at least seven sizes of a salmon reel available. The salmon reels will be first and the 4.25" Spey is due
in early 2008. The other salmon models will be completed between then and early spring of 2008. This is not an order and then wait situation. Joe has designed a superb classic reel which can be made on a CNC machine (it's being made in Oregon---not overseas somewhere.) We'll be giving up some of the desirable features of his boutique reels, like real pillars that are attached with hand made screws. However, by using CNC Joe is able to make reels quickly enough to meet demand and to keep his prices in the reasonable range. However, every machinist knows that CNC machines can keep tolerances closer than any human working at a bench. As the photos will show, this is a beautiful reel, but it also features a sealed drag system and the drag is a multi-disc Rulon system that has far more drag available than I think any salmon fisherman is likely to need. The backplate removes easily and so spools can be changed quickly and without any loose parts to lose. It is easily convertible from LH to RH retrieve. I will post more on the trout models when information becomes available, but expect them to be quite similar to the Mark II models he was doing when he "retired." They will be available in 2.75", 3.0" and 3.25" diameters, and will cost $750.00. Unlike the Salmon/Spey models, the Mark IV Trout reels will not have a removable back cover nor will spare spools be offered. I will complete the table below when more information becomes available.
I can take orders for future delivery on the 4.25" Spey right now. If you'd like to pre-order any other size of the trout or salmon models I can also take that order. I do not have firm information yet on weights and capacities of these, however. I expect to get them quite soon and will plug them into the table below when I have them.
I think I've convinced the Saracione team to make the Alta sooner than was their plan. I already have three of them ordered by customers in Norway and Joe has the material on-hand to do a small run of about twenty reels. I have ten of those committed to my business which means I'll have seven of them available quite soon. Delivery is expected to be in late April. If you fish Norway, or the Grand Cascapedia with a speyrod, or even the Thompson you owe it to yourself to consider one of these. The capacity is going to be enormous and it's going to be a superb reel. The price has not been finalized, but it expected to be under $1200.00US. This is quite likely the only run of the Alta models that will be done this year. Call or e-mail me now if you want to be on the list. I'll get the exact price and the weight up on this table as soon as I have them confirmed.
