Peerless
Peerless fly reels are made by Bob Corsetti in Nashua, New Hampshire. The trout reels are styled after the Bogdans and others of that ilk. They are beautifully understated with black side plates and satin silver frame and crossbars. Unlike several of the classic reels on the market, the Peerless models are completely anodized. The #1 is also usually available in all black. All round trout models feature an S-handle and all except the #1 and #7 are available only with the external pawl adjustment. The "7" series (77 and 7M) feature raised pillars, a solid spool and crankplate, and a diamond (Conroy) styled handle (half-handle on the #77.) The Salmon reels are designed after the vom Hofe reels and look somewhat similar to other vom Hofe reincarnations. There is one exception, and that is that the Peerless Salmon model has a knurled oversized knob on the backplate for drag adjustment as opposed to the 7-10 position detent lever used on the original vom Hofe and most of its modern copies. There are advantages to both systems, so take your pick. In addition to the self-cleaning, non-fading, non-sticking drag system, the Salmon models also include the Peerless pawl/click system in order to prevent free-spooling. These are really beautiful, non-glare, traditionally-styled reels. The integrity of this system does not allow for quick spool changes. The #4A is a very large version of the trout reels designed specifically for speyfishing. It was the first classic S-handled reels to feature just a gear and pawl with no actual drag. It has enormous capacity, even for a spey reel. It's also not nearly as heavy as many spey reels. The recent movement to shorter Scandinavian and Skagit rods means there's a definite need for lighter weight reels that still have quite a bit of capacity. The #4A fills this roll very well.
