The gentlemen at Megoff had been trying for years
to get me to carry their reels. I field tested reels for them in
both 2001 and in 2003. I helped them try to create a reel that would
appeal the fishermen in the West. Unfortunately, when they finally
got it right in 2004 the prices were beyond what I thought would
sell. Don't get me wrong, the reels were worth every penny they
needed to get for them, but they were in the same price range as
titanium reels then made by other makers in Europe, and I felt it might
be difficult to sell very many at those prices for a reel from the
Ukraine. Two things have happened since then. First off, Megoff and I have worked together to reduce the prices on its models somewhat. Perhaps more importantly, the price of titanium has increased significantly and therefore the prices for titanium reels from other European companies has gone up considerably. Many comparable European ti reels cost from $6000.00 to $10,000. That makes the prices listed below a true bargain and will not last beyond 2008.
And these prices are for the reels where "They got it right!" Their newest reel, which is in stock, is a very simple trout reel
in all titanium with two stainless steel ball bearings. It is so
simple that there is no RH/LH gearing. Retrieve is determined by
how you wind the line onto the spool. There is a very pleasant sounding
click that works in both directions. The reel is a large arbor design
with the spool resting on a bearing with a hole in the middle. This
design allowed them to keep the reel very light, especially for
a titanium model. The TR 23 model has been available for over two years and has sold quite well. For 2008, they are adding a TR 45 model.
They are a stunning piece of artwork at a very reasonable price. The 23 models
are currently in stock and the 45 models should arrive soon. Megoff is shipping me MDS models as quickly as they can. I have most sizes of the MDS models in stock, though some I have only in RH or only in LH. More will be arriving in early 2008. I've convinced them to make more MDS 79 models, which haven't been available for well over a year. I have three of them coming (it's all I could get) and one of them is already sold. If you want that sized Megoff I'd get your name down soon for what is expected to be delivery during the second quarter of 2008.
