Magla Reels
Magla,
formerly known as Storm Reels, comes to us from South Africa. For
several years, they had a model referred to as the Mark 5 and more
recently that was joined by the LA9/10 model. Both reels are now
in their second generation with the LA9/10 currently available and
the new Mark 5 due soon. I would describe
these reels as no-nonsense. They are not the shiniest nor especially
lightweight. They are simply built with a drawbar-type cork disc
drag and a well-designed outgoing click. The LA9/10 comes only in
a semi-gloss black. The second generation has a little more visual
appeal in the backplate cutouts and a fancier design on the spool
ventilating. The frame and spool are machined from solid barstock
and the parts that aren't aluminum or cork are 316 stainless. This
is a terrific 8/9/10 weight reel at home in either fresh or saltwater.
I currently use mine as my nine weight bonefish reel and have plans
to install one of my floating Atlantic salmon lines on a spare spool.
I will add more information to this page when the Mark 5 multi-spool
model becomes available later this year. This is a single frame with small arbor,
mid-arbor, and large arbor spools available for it.
See my Misc./Used
listings for the previous model (2005) of the LA9/10.
It is being offered at considerable savings and has almost all the same features as the new model. The
outgoing click is designed differently and the backplate is solid.
There are only two LA9/10 models (1 LH and 1 RH) still around.
